The conference theme, (Re)Turning South: Politics, Book Bans, Anti-Revisionist Histories, and Rebellions, centered a diverse range of topics across 40 distinct panels including queer ethnic studies, anti-intellectualism, book bans and school board politics, intersectionality, and more. Courtesy of Southern University the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans hosted the Business at the Bayou event. This event brought together nonprofit, corporate, and local businesses to showcase their products and services to students, alumni, and visitors. The event allowed small black-owned businesses to present their products and network with potential customers by telling them their stories and connecting with their products. Over 100 vendors participated in the expo, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small black-owned businesses, all selling their products on Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Written by Nick Corasaniti Just three years ago, Mississippi had an election law on its books from an 1890 constitutional convention that was designed to uphold “white supremacy” in the state. The law created a system for electing statewide officials that was similar to the Electoral College — and that drastically reduced the political power of Black voters. Voters overturned the Jim Crow-era law in 2020.
