Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to be among those marking the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the day Alabama law officers attacked Civil Rights demonstrators on the iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The demonstrators were beaten by officers as they tried to march across Alabama on March 7, 1965, in support of voting rights. A march across the bridge, which is a highlight of the commemoration in Selma every year, is planned for Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s march is among dozens of events during the annual Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee, which began Thursday and culminates Sunday. The list of notable HBCU alumni is long and includes the likes of Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court Justice, and Kamala Harris, the first Black vice president of the United States. According to a report by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), HBCUs make up only 3% of higher education institutions in the United States, yet they enroll 10% of all Black students, making them an essential part of the higher education landscape. In 2021, Slaughter became the first Black player to join Texas A&M Women’s Golf since 1975. “My time here’s been awesome,” Slaughter told KAGS. “We’ve always had a pretty great team, hard work ethic. I’ve just been having a good time here playing good tournaments, playing good golf and ready to keep going forward.” Slaughter is often described as the glue that holds the team together. A&M has experienced unprecedented success with Slaughter, making two consecutive appearances in the national semifinals.
